DC5 - Yahya Farooqi

Hello! My name is Yahya, and I’ll be working at the VU Amsterdam and the University of Bologna for my PhD project as part of the MSCA FAIROmics consortium. I am from Canada but moved to Copenhagen to do my master’s at DTU two years ago, where I worked on genome-scale metabolic models in the context of strain optimisation for cheese production.

As part of my PhD, I am applying my experience with metabolic models to help combine mechanistic modeling with machine learning methods, to have better predictive models for microbial metabolism. Over the course of my PhD, I hope to develop and use such methods to help design fermentation conditions to improve plant-based food texture, taste, and nutritional value!

I was interested in working in this consortium due to the multi-disciplinary and applied nature of MSCA projects, and because the research topic at hand was both theoretically interesting and relevant for the environment through the development of sustainable food alternatives.
