Fellow Presentation :

My name is Pedro Duarte, and I am from Portugal. I hold a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Engineering Physics from Instituto Superior Técnico at the University of Lisbon. Throughout my studies, I participated in a diverse range of internships, tackling subjects such as solving integral equations in particle physics, working with spectrometers in an optics lab, and developing neural networks for CERN. These varied experiences, along with the courses I pursued during my Master’s program, helped me identify my core research interests. This journey ultimately led me to focus my Master's thesis on Complex Networks, where I studied the diffusion of information on Twitter, aiming to understand how fake news propagates on such platforms.

My research project (DC10) will primarily take place in Bologna and Szeged. The main objective is to develop a machine learning tool capable of automating the extraction of information from scientific texts, as well as classifying and identifying connections within the extracted data. Ultimately, this information will be used to construct knowledge graphs and ontologies, which are expected to benefit all participants in the project.

What attracts me most to this PhD and the project as a whole is its emphasis on multidisciplinarity and cooperation, while learning and using the tools and methods I am most interested in. Having the chance to work with experts from diverse fields and groups is also a very exciting opportunity and I think it will make me grow as a researcher by exposing me to a lot of different ways of thinking.
